RPG General News - Assassin's Creed: Hexe
Insider-Gaming collected some info about the next Assassin's Creed game ('Hexe' German = 'Witch'):
EXCLUSIVE – EARLY DETAILS ON ASSASSIN’S CREED HEXE
Details on Assassin’s Creed Hexe are few and far between. Officially, the series’ Vice President and Executive Producer, Marc-Alexis Cote, alluded that the game will be different from past entries and developed by Ubisoft Montreal. From the game’s official tease, we know that it will lean heavily into witchcraft, with the game rumored to be set in Central Europe during the 16th-century Holy Roman Empire (via Bloomberg).
Insider Gaming understands that the game is still in a relatively early stage of development and is expected to be released in 2026 on the Infinity platform. Hexe is understood to be a more linear experience compared to its predecessors with some elements of open-world exploration, somewhat akin to some of the earlier Assassin’s Creed games. As already reported by Insider Gaming, Hexe is poised to have a single female protagonist, currently named Elsa, who has some supernatural abilities.

Broken Roads - Interview @ RPGFan
RPGFan has interviewed Drop Bear Bytes about Broken Roads:
Broken Roads Interview with Drop Bear Bytes
Broken Roads Interview with Drop Bear Bytes text over two characters in a wasteland with a bomb blast in the far distance.
I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of drought and flooding rains. An excerpt from Dorothea Mackellar’s famous poem “My Country” 1906
The excerpt above is to many within Australia (of which I am one) as perfect a verse as exists to encapsulate the beautiful and unforgiving nature of the Great Southern Land. Of course, Australia is much more than this, both now and for the estimated 65,000 years of its human history, and to those ancient inhabitants, it is a land of many nations with distinct cultures and identities. What does the future look like in such a land? And what would that future bring if some apocalyptic reset event occurred? Many stories and films have pondered this, the most prominent and influential example being George Miller’s 1979 film Mad Max. The world of Mad Max is chaotic and amoral, where death is king and mercy is myth.
[...]
Answers were provided by Craig Ritchie (Game Director), Anniemay Parker (Narrative Designer), and Tim Sunderland (Composer and Audio Lead).
RPGFan: I’ll start by asking you to introduce Broken Roads and share some insight into its original conception.
Craig Ritchie: In its earliest form, Broken Roads was going to be a road-trip SRPG with tactical combat. Far more focus on the encounters and the combat, but we couldn’t help ourselves in adding more to the world and the characters’ backstories and so on. It wasn’t even Australia at first — just some generic post-apocalyptic location.
As we dug further in, well, we realised we were designing something closer to Baldur’s Gate 2 (both my and my co-founder’s favourite game) or the early Fallouts, and we dropped the “S” part and focused on a traditional isometric RPG in the style that we love.

SAND LAND - Review @ IGN
IGN checked out the upcoming SAND LAND:
Sand Land Review
"I'm happy to see Sand Land get a second wind with an open-world action game, and it can sometimes adapt the series in impressive ways. But while there is the potential of an interesting expansion of the manga here, it doesn’t manage to replicate what Toriyama's panels were able to illustrate so effectively. Beneath some ho-hum dialogue and stilted cutscenes is a fun story with its heart in the right place, and Beelzebub and friends at least have the charisma to carry you through to the end alongside a quirky set of supporting characters and villains. Dialing in on vehicular combat and exploration pays off to both maintain the spirit of the original work and deliver some high points, but the quests themselves fall into repetition. Thus, Sand Land suffers the same fate we’ve seen in many other game adaptations of anime and manga – competent in several respects with a few moments of brilliance, but for the most part, a simply okay adventure that can only occasionally capture what makes the source material special."

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II - Evolution
Gamepressure reports that Kingdom Come: Deliverance II will be similar to its predecessor:
Kingdom Come 2 Set to Be More 'Dark and Serious.' However, Devs Assure Style Continuity from Original
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 will be better, more serious, and darker than the first installment of the series, but the Warhorse Studio is talking about evolution rather than revolution.
Despite a slight spoiler, fans of Kingdom Come: Deliverance still enthusiastically embraced the official announcement of the sequel to this medieval RPG. Especially since the devs of KCD 2 shared lots of information about the project.
Tobias Stolz-Zwilling of Warhorse Studios spoke with us twice: the first time before the game was officially revealed, and the second time, just after the presentation. During both interviews, the Czech revealed a little more about the second Kingdom Come: Deliverance.
Better and more, but without revolution
As is typical for a sequel, the second installment is meant to be "larger and superior to its predecessor," but the devs don't want to change anything by force. When it comes to a "twice as big" game world (which will consist of two maps), the matter is simple. However, when it comes to other elements, the developers prefer evolution over revolution. The combat will be made somewhat easier and will include new weapons such as firearms and throwing weapons. However, this won't turn KCD into a shooter, especially since this first category of weapons will be quite primitive and - if handled improperly - dangerous to use. The system will continue to offer a significant level of complexity for those who wish to fully understand it.
The same applies to the story, which is to be more "deep, dark, and more serious," but still not without the humor known from the first part. As the civil war in Bohemia escalates, Henry will once again find himself caught in the midst of the conflict, attempting to balance good intentions with the need to use ethically questionable methods.
However, all of this will be interspersed with funny or less serious situations. Suffice it to say that Henry's allies will include some truly "peculiar" individuals. The well-known and beloved Hans Capon returns in the sequel, just as rebellious as in the first installment.

Sword of Convallaria - Preview @ TBL
The Turn Based Lovers checked out the upcoming tactical RPG Sword of Convallaria:
SWORD OF CONVALLARIA – A WORTHY RELATIVE OF FINAL FANTASY TACTICS? – PREVIEW
Sword of Convallaria is a tactical RPG and mercenary company manager with a self-described NeoPixel art style. Its combat is reminiscent of games such as Final Fantasy Tactics and Fire Emblem and aims to have a multi-pathed path story with a wide roster of heroes able to be recruited and summoned on the battlefield, alongside engaging squad-based skirmishes. But how well does the Sword of Convallaria achieve this?
So Sword of Convallaria is what’s called a gacha summoner. You get units by pulling summons using in-game and, often, real-world currency and a gacha summoner; one of the big points is how the game pushes you into spending money on rolls for your units, heroes, or waifus, or whatever it is you would like to call them. Since this is just a demo build, I will not be going into the market or costs except for a bit later in the campaign portion of this preview later on.
[...]
Overall, I had a great time with Sword of Convallaria, and I’m interested to see where the story goes from here, as well as the alternate timelines the game advertises with its branching story paths. It seems many of the summoning mechanics are for the Fates Journey and leave the story mode Spirals of Destiny alone for the most part, meaning a decent story with engaging management mechanics in a fantastic art style for free, perhaps. It’s hard to say how monetization will go at launch, but I have high hopes that Sword of Convallaria will be the next free-to-play game you try out.

Passageway of the Ancients - Polishing Phase
The tactical RPG Passageway of the Ancients is in the last phase of development:
Passageway of the Ancients: Behind the Curtain #2
We are pleased to report significant progress on major enhancements to Passageway of the Ancients as we ready it for launch. In our previous post, we were at the five-yard line in terms of putting finishing touches on the game. Now we feel we are at the two-yard line, with strong forward momentum!
When we last posted, our primary focus was creating the game’s real-time special/particle effects. For example, we were creating a visual cue that indicates when weapons, armor, and shields receive a stat enhancement or elemental magic bonuses. We have successfully achieved these special effects goals and believe they will significantly enhance the game.
We have also upgraded the comparative inventory feature. You can now compare weapons and armor across all party members at the same time, allowing for a more streamlined approach when equipping your characters. New keyboard shortcuts, an updated right-click menu, and quicker methods to sell items in shops also make overall inventory interaction even easier.
The UI has also been significantly improved. We adjusted several aspects for balance and clarity, such as optimizing and consolidating the character window and redesigning travel menus. We also overhauled the combat options window to give players more detail and granular control over spell casting. The quest log has been revised to make it easier for players to track their progress and view helpful quest information.
The new real-time special/particle effects, inventory feature, and UI upgrades have been added to the current Steam demo. Please check it out and tell us what you think!
Sure, this polishing phase has slightly delayed the release of Passageway of the Ancients, but we felt it was a worthwhile endeavor. As stated in our previous post, we are committed to quality in all aspects of the game – from the storyline and graphics to (of course!) the gameplay.
Thank you for your interest in the world of Aieryon. We greatly appreciate it and will continue to update you on our progress towards launch.

Broken Roads - Review
Digitally Downloaded reviewed Broken Roads:
Review: Broken Roads (PC)
So this is what Australia will be like soon...
One of my favourite things about Broken Roads is that every second sentence there’s a word that’s highlighted, and you can press a button to see a little pop-up explaining what that word means. That word is inevitably a piece of Australian English, and the developers felt the need to include a complete glossary so that non-Australians could figure out what was actually being said.
In every other way, Broken Roads plays out like a classic Fallout (as in, before Fallout 3) or Wasteland. It’s a post-apocalyptic, gritty, hard western that likes to challenge the player’s morality almost as much as it does throwing them into deadly situations. But it’s also Australian. Not in a Crocodile Dundee over-the-top caricature to appeal to the stereotypical “understanding” of Australia that other places in the world seem to think is cute. No. It’s as Australian as Fallout is American. It just is, and that’s appealing.
[...]
There aren’t too many truly authentic games set in Australia, made by Australians, telling Australian stories. Broken Roads is one, and it is one of the most different and interesting games you’ll play this year on that basis alone. Yes there are more refined RPGs out there, but none of those will take you on a crash course through Australian mannerisms while delivering a compelling narrative of human resilience, community, weakness and savagery.
Score: 4.5/5

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn - Preview @ Wccftech
Wccftech checked out the action RPG Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn:
Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn Preview and Q&A – Wide Linear Soulslite with 20 Hours of Content
At GDC 2024, New Zealand-based developer A44 (known for 2018's Ashen) provided an updated look at Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, its upcoming action RPG that sits between God of War and a lite, more accessible version of the Soulslike genre.
A44 is now composed of around 65 employees, and they've been working on this game for quite a while. Flintlock fantasy novels inspire the game's original setting with a striking central theme: Gods wielding magic versus armies made of regular people wielding guns from a Napoleonic era.
At the beginning of Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, main character Nor Vanek is attempting to close the door of the 'Great Below' death realm to prevent the dead from rising. Unfortunately, the mission heavily backfires and not only is the portal still open, the Gods have been unleashed in the world, too.
[...]
You mentioned that the flintlock setting was employed by multiple authors across many books. Is there a specific one you've drawn inspiration from?
No, there isn't a specific one. We actually consulted with a few of the authors really early on in development. Just like we wanted to stamp our brand in the Soulslike genre, we want to do the same when it comes to the flintlock fantasy genre setting as well.
You use the term wide linear to describe the level layout. But as we saw a moment ago for this biome, there is like a larger open world map. Do you have free rein once you're in that specific biome to go where you wish, or is the game still kind of guiding you toward key points of interest?
You will be guided through the main path. Off of that, you'll have side content that you can go and explore. We do describe ourselves as a wide linear game for that reason, it's not really an open world per se. There's distinct zones that you can travel into.

No Rest For The Wicked Developer Moon Studios On Why Remote Development Is Key To Its Success
No Rest for the Wicked is the upcoming action RPG from Moon Studios, the developer behind Ori and the Blind Forest/Will of the Wisps. It's also the game gracing the latest cover of Game Informer. Cover story writer and editor Marcus Stewart and I traveled to Vienna, Austria, to play the game and speak with two of its leads, tech and production director and studio co-founder Gennadiy Korol and studio CEO and creative director Thomas Mahler.
However, while the frosted glass of the front door of the two-story apartment we entered was engraved with the words "Moon Studios", this studio is actually just Mahler's workplace. Korol met us in Vienna for the cover story, but he actually lives in Israel. The rest of Moon Studios lives around the world, because Moon Studios is completely remote – there is no headquarters to report to or central location to work.
While remote development has become more popular as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Moon Studios has been remote since its founding in 2009. When I asked Korol and Mahler about remote development, it's clear it's a big part of the team's winning game development formula, responsible for the aforementioned Ori games and the upcoming No Rest for the Wicked, which launches into Early Access on PC next month.

Larian Studios - Working on two Projects
GamingBolt reports that Larian is currently working on two projects:
Larian Studios is Working on Two Projects Based on its Own IP
The Baldur's Gate 3 developer recently confirmed that it's next game wouldn't be tied to Dungeons and Dragons in any way.
“Being given the chance to develop a game set in the Dungeons and Dragons universe has been a dream come true for all of us,” Larian wrote. “But as Swen recently confirmed, we won’t be introducing any major new narrative content to the story of Baldur’s Gate 3 or its origin characters and companions, nor will we be making expansions or Baldur’s Gate 4.
“As an independent studio since 1996, we value the freedom to follow our creativity wherever it leads. In this case, after six years in the Forgotten Realms and much discussion and rumination, we’ve decided to seize this opportunity to develop our own IPs. We’re currently working on two new projects and we couldn’t be more excited about what the future has in store.”

Baldur's Gate 3 - Swen Vincke Interview
Gamesindustry interviewed Swen Vincke:
Larian after Baldur's Gate 3: "We have ambitions to make really good RPGs, and that's sufficient"
CEO Swen Vincke on the studio's biggest hit, why the team is moving on, and solving the industry's unsustainable growth
Last week, Larian's Baldur's Gate 3 won five BAFTAs, including Best Game and Player's Choice.

"We did something new," Vincke says when chatting about BG3's success. "We put agency in cinematics at a level that hadn't been done before, and we didn't go out of the way trying to take shortcuts, although we did use a lot of tricks. But you can sense that the agency was real, I think. So that's a massive reason. We didn't deviate from that, even if we were facing development problems."
The resurgence of Dungeons & Dragons, and the weight of the Baldur's Gate name, both played their part in this success story, but there was a real 'if you build it, they will come' approach to making Baldur's Gate 3, coupled with not only a strong bond with the Larian community but the right strategy to maintain it.
"I'll give you a very Catholic answer – treat your players as you would like to be treated, that's it," Vincke says when asked about how to maintain trust with a game's community.

No Rest for the Wicked - Preview
TSA checked out No Rest for the Wicked:
No Rest For The Wicked is a dark and dangerous addition to the action RPG genre
Accompanied by strains of vocal-led orchestral music, the Moon Studios title rises into view. For many, this is reason enough to sit up and take notice of No Rest For The Wicked. For the studio behind the sublime Ori series, a visually arresting and emotional pair of platformers, this is the tricky third album: a new IP, a new direction, and a launch into Early Access along with it. Taking a swing at the action RPG genre, there’s echoes of From Software alongside Diablo here, and yet, Moon Studios’ enigmatic outlook shines through. On first impressions alone, there’s nothing to be worried about for fans of the studio – excusing the decadent horrors that lie within.
